Description
A late 18th or early 19th century farmhouse with adjoining former barn and stables, situated in Chilson, near Pudlicote. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a stone slate roof and an L-shaped plan. It has two storeys and an attic, with dressed stone end stacks featuring chamfered offsets, weatherings, and moulded cornices, and a stone ridge stack at the junction with a rear wing. Dormers with 2-light wooden casements are visible in the roof. The front elevation has three windows, with boxed glazing bar sashes, stone cills, and segmental-arched stone heads. A four-panelled door with a margin-light rectangular overlight and a moulded stone hood on shaped brackets is centrally positioned between the first and second windows. A later 19th century wing extends to the rear. The interior of the farmhouse has not been inspected.
Adjacent to the farmhouse is an 18th century former barn, partially integrated into the house during the mid to late 19th century. Constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a stone slate roof, it has four bays with a single storey and attic to the left. A stone ridge stack, offset to the left, has a chamfered offset and moulded cornice. A gabled semi-dormer with a 4-pane sash, stone cill and chamfered wooden lintel is positioned on the left. A ground-floor 4-pane sash has a stone cill and segmental-arched stone head. A gabled porch in the second bay features a blocked cart entrance, and smaller inserted double doors. A loft opening is in the right-hand gable end. A brick link connects to the main house. Other features include two tiers of blocked triangular vents, a blocked rear doorway, and an interior with collar-and-tie-beam trusses and pairs of purlins.
Late 18th century stables adjoin the barn at right angles. The stables are built of coursed limestone rubble with a stone slate roof, one storey and a loft. They include a gabled semi-dormer with a boarded loft door and a 2-light wooden loft casement. A small ground-floor window has a wooden lintel and an inserted 20th century metal casement. A boarded door with a wooden lintel and a large boarded sliding door are also present. A 19th century one-storey block adjoins the stables to the right, constructed of squared and coursed limestone with a 20th century machine tile roof. It has two boarded stable doors with wooden lintels and a 2-light window with wooden lintels. The interior of these buildings has not been inspected. The buildings form part of an extensive farmstead group.
