Description
The Robert Aston tomb, located about 10 meters south of the southwest corner of the Church of St John, is a Grade II* listed bale-tomb. It commemorates Robert Aston, an innholder of the George, who died in 1698, and his wife Sarah, who passed away in 1705. The tomb is constructed of ashlar and features a large Baroque design. It includes scroll-work escutcheons on the end panels and two slate memorial panels set into the north side. The structure is adorned with three pilasters that showcase high relief carvings of fruit and vegetables, with a putto in the center and leaf ornamentation in the frieze above. It has a moulded plinth and cornice, and the bale is divided into two parts, featuring bobbin end moulding and fishscale decoration in the center. There are three vase finials, although the central finial is broken.
