Description
This is a pair of gate piers and gates located approximately 220 meters south of Filkins Hall. The gate piers date from the early to mid-18th century and are made of ashlar stone, featuring a square plan with moulded bases and moulded box cornices. They have moulded and stepped tops topped with large ball finials, and side pilasters on the inner faces that have carved scroll tops. Between the piers, there is a pair of wrought iron gates, likely from around 1912, which are adorned with scrolled ornament and a delicate scrolled overthrow. The gates and gate piers serve as a focal point for the vista down the avenue, aligned with the south front of Filkins Hall, which was originally built between 1730 and 1740, destroyed by fire in 1876, and rebuilt between 1912 and 1914.
