Description
The Kennet Memorial, located about 10 metres south-southeast of the porch of the Church of St John, is a bale tomb dating from around 1760. It is constructed of enriched ashlar and features a moulded plinth and frieze. The long sides of the tomb are adorned with three pilasters that have high relief carvings of garlands of fruit and flowers, with the outer pilasters also featuring putti heads. The rounded capping is broken out in gadrooning over the pilasters. The plain bale has three raised panels decorated with vegetable ornamentation. The urn that once capped this monument, similar to the Aston Memorial, has been removed. The tomb has scallop ends, with the western end containing a skull. Inscriptions on the memorial commemorate Thomas, who died in 1731, and Rebeckah, who died in 1730.
