Description
The gatepiers and gates located approximately 50 meters northwest of the northwest corner of the north service range of Bruern Abbey are likely from the 19th century, though they may include fragments from the medieval period. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature a square section with a projecting base, coping, and ball finials. Each pier has a shield that appears to be medieval, set in a slight recess at the center. Attached to each pier are short sections of ramped wall that may incorporate reused fragments of medieval window tracery. The piers are connected by 19th-century wrought iron gates that have a decorative overthrow. A Cistercian abbey was established at Bruern in 1146, but little remains visible above ground. These gatepiers and gates are included for their group value.
