Description

Burford Grammar School consists of two burgage houses under one roof, dating from around 1700 to 1720. The buildings have been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries, including a new roof and adaptations for school use. The front is made of ashlar stone, with a Cotswold stone roof that is hipped to the north return. The structure is two storeys high and features five bays on the left and seven bays on the right, with chamfered quoins and a quoin strip separating the two houses. There is a wooden modillion eaves cornice.

The left-hand house has late 18th century, 19th century, and late 20th century glazing bar sash windows, with moulded architraves, plinths, and cills. The central window is smaller and pedimented, featuring a pulvinated frieze, while a former doorway below it has been blocked, with a matching window next to it. The right-hand part has raised flat architraves, mostly restored in the 20th century, with cock-beads and keystones. It has a configuration of three bays, one bay, and three bays, with a central wide 20th century entry that matches the style of the rest.

A rubble chimney is located on the right side, and the rubble return to Lawrence Lane retains one range of early 18th century windows that have been restored. The first-floor windows have transoms, while the ground-floor windows feature both mullions and transoms. There is also a mid-19th century extension with a 1:2-bay layout. The right-hand part displays a Sun Fire Insurance Mark (No 82516) in the centre of the first floor.
