Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Grade II* listed church built around 1858, with its tower completed in 1874 and later rebuilt in a shorter form in the early 20th century. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, the church is constructed of squared coursed stone and features imitation stone tile roofs, except for the stone spire. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style and includes a 4-bay aisled nave, a central tower, and a chancel.

On the south side, there is a stone gabled porch to the left of the center of the south aisle, which has a two-centred archway on columns and a two-centred doorway with a plank door, featuring decorative wrought-iron hinges. The north and south aisles have paired lancets with quatrefoils above, creating cross-gables. The clerestory contains three-light stone mullion windows. There are two lancets in the side chapel to the south and in the organ chamber to the north. The east end of the chancel features a triple lancet with a Rose window above it. The west end has lancets at the ends of the aisles, a central two-centre arched doorway with a gabled canopy surround on shafts, and two lancets in the nave with a Rose window above.

The central tower has a square base and an octagonal second stage with two-light plate-tracery louvred openings, topped by a broach spire with hipped lanterns on the cardinal sides. Inside, the chancel has an arch-braced roof and painted inscriptions on sheet metal on the walls of the chancel and over the nave arcades. The chancel features an encaustic tile floor and a frescoed fleur-de-lys pattern behind the altar. The crossing has a wood panelled roof with decorative painting on the ribs and panels, and there are 19th-century choir stalls. The church includes two-centre arches in the chancel, nave, side chapel, and organ, with nave arcades consisting of four two-centred arches on round piers. Additional features include a 19th-century pulpit, pews, and font.
