Description

Two Herring monuments are located at the north-east corner of the chancel of the Church of All Saints. These monuments date from the mid-18th century and are made of stone. The first is a raised tombstone featuring inscriptions arranged in two well-lettered columns, each adorned with decorative brackets and topped with a cherub holding an hourglass. This tombstone commemorates several members of the Herring family: Edward, who died in 1747; John, who died in 1748; and Joseph, who died in 1796.

The second monument is a chest tomb with a rectangular base and a moulded plinth. It has recessed angles and is supported by attached square fluted columns with moulded bases and capitals. The chest features engraved panels, a cornice, and a moulded lid. This tomb commemorates additional members of the Herring family: on the south side, Joseph, who died in 1763, and his wife Mary, who died in 1812; on the north side, John, who died in 1813, and his wife Anna, who died in 1793; and on the east end, their son Joseph, who died in 1810 (of the auditors' office, Somerset House), and his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1868. The rails of a former enclosure have been removed.
