Description
Bourton Bridge is a Grade II listed triple-span overbridge, featuring semi-elliptical arches and a sweeping hump-back profile. It dates from the 19th century and is constructed with some original red brick in the arch rings and lower piers, while the elevations and parapets have been refaced in red engineering brick with purple engineering brick detailing, arranged in English bond.
The central arch spans 30 feet (9 meters), while the side arches are lower, each spanning 20 feet (6 meters). Each pier has a single transverse arch. A plain purple engineering brick string course, originally moulded, runs along the bridge. The parapets end in piers that project on the outer face only, at the ends of the raked and curved wing walls. The inner face of the parapets features low chamfered plinths. The coping is made of bull-nosed purple engineering brick, except for the terminating piers, which are finished with quarry-faced stone blocks.
The bridge is set in a rural landscape but is visible from the nearby Bourton Church Bridge, which is half a mile up the line towards Didcot.
