Description

The Church of St John, built in 1861 by J H Hugall, is located on Fernham High Street. It is constructed from squared and coursed rubble stone, featuring dressed stone quoins and copings, and has gabled stone tiled roofs. The church consists of a three-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, with a single bellcote, a south porch, and a north vestry. It showcases Early English architectural details, including two-light cusped windows with roundels above, set under pointed arches in the nave, and plain cusped lancets in the chancel. The east window consists of three cusped lancets with a quatrefoil and trefoils above, all under a pointed arch enclosed by a dripstone with uncut capitals. The west front features two cusped lancets with quatrefoils above, flanking a stepped buttress. The south porch has an outer arch that is moulded and ends in tightly foliated capitals, while the inner arch is a single moulded arch with uncut capitals. The interior is aisleless, with open rafter roofs and a plainly moulded chancel arch supported by half shafts with tightly foliated capitals. Notable features include stained glass in the east window by Wailes from 1867, along with further stained glass in the south window of the chancel and the south windows of the nave. The church also has a stone pulpit with coloured marble insets and an octagonal font on coloured marble piers, both of which are contemporary with the church. St John's is situated on an elevated site that overlooks the village center.
