Description
Downs House is a house that likely dates from the 17th century and has undergone later alterations. The central section features late 18th century and 19th century Flemish bond brickwork, while the left side wing is rendered over what is probably an original timber frame and has club- and plain-tile cladding on the rear gable wall. The right side has club- and plain-tile cladding on the first floor above a brick ground floor. The house has a tiled roof and brick stacks.
It is 2-storey in the left and central sections and 1.5-storey on the right, with a six-window range on the first floor. The left gable has a single 20th century light, while the center features a two-window range with segmental arches over late 19th century horned sash windows and a one-light window next to a six-panelled 20th century door. This door has carved consoles supporting a flat hood and a moulded architrave from around 1900. To the right, there are late 19th century horned sash windows in three gabled dormers and four ground floor windows. The central block has dentilled eaves and a gabled roof with ridge, end, and internal stacks.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. There is a 1.5-storey late 19th century wing built against the front left wall. At the rear of the central and right block is an early 19th century two-storey addition, which has a seven-window range with segmental arches over a 20th century door to the right and late 19th century horned sash windows, also featuring dentilled eaves.
