Description

The former house and attached cartshed, located approximately 30 meters northwest of The Manor House in Stanford-in-the-Vale, dates from the late 16th to early 17th century. Originally a house, it was converted into stables in the 18th century and later into a garage in the 20th century. The building features dressed and coursed limestone that has replaced the original timber-framed walls. It has a stone slate roof on the sides and rear, with an old tile roof and stone slate farwells at the front. The structure has a three-unit plan, is two storeys high, and has a two-window range. There are timber lintels over plank and stable doors on the left, with an inserted garage opening on the right. The roof is half hipped.

Inside, there is a four-bay queen post roof with butt purlins. The tie beams have dovetail joints, indicating the previous existence of timber frame walling, and they are tenoned into the partitions. The first-floor room to the right is divided in two by an axial timber-framed partition, and chamfered beams are also present at the first-floor level. Attached to the right wall is an 18th-century cartshed built with similar materials, which has a five-bay mid-20th-century roof and much restored posts resting on stone pads at the front.
