Description

The bale tomb located approximately 2 metres east of the porch of the Church of St. Michael in Letcombe Bassett dates from 1690. It is made of limestone ashlar and is designed in the Provincial Baroque style. The tomb features a moulded plinth and cornice, with fluting on the bale. The sides have blind panels that flank a central panel, which displays a low relief carving of a wigged head surrounded by drapery. The end panels have illegible inscriptions and are decorated with scalloped shells, one of which includes a central skull sunk into the top.
