Description
Greendown Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from 1774, as indicated by the datestone above the door. It is constructed from uncoursed chalk rubble on a sarsen base, with limestone quoins and dressings, and features an old tile roof with brick stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in the Gothic Revival style. It is two stories high with a three-window range. There is an 18th-century fire insurance plaque and a late 20th-century flat hood over a late 20th-century door. The windows are three-light, cavetto-moulded stone-mullioned with arched heads and moulded architraves, and there is a similar trefoiled and ogee-headed two-light window above the door. A brick band runs along the wood dentilled eaves, and the roof is half-hipped with end stacks. At the rear, the central bay is brought forward, featuring a segmental brick arch over a 20th-century casement that replaces the original stair-light opening.
Inside, the farmhouse has two-panelled and plank doors, and a six-panelled 16th-century door leading to the first floor. The left room has a panelled dado, and there is a newel staircase. The roof features a four-bay collar truss with pine butt purlins. The original service wing to the right has rear gabled projections with a stack made of chalk and sarsen rubble, dentilled brick eaves, and a tile roof. Inside the service wing, there is a chamfered bressumer over the fireplace, but the original two-bay roof is obscured by a 20th-century ceiling. There is also a 20th-century extension to the right.
