Description

Wyfold Court is a country house built between 1874 and 1884 by George Somers Clarke the Elder for Edward Hermon. It was later used as a hospital from 1932 to 1993 and converted into apartments by 2000, with some 20th-century alterations. The house is constructed of red brick with a grey brick diaper pattern, topped with a plain tile roof and decorative brick stacks. It is built in a complex French Gothic style.

The house is two storeys and an attic, with a four-storey and attic wing to the right and prominent towers. The main elevation has fourteen windows and includes a stone porte cochere to the left, featuring two-centre arches on three sides, with a studded door set within an elaborate Gothic moulded stone surround. The fenestration is irregular, predominantly featuring stone mullion and transom windows with intricate carved hoods. The roof is complex, with cross-gables, towers, and turrets, adorned with ornamental ridge tiles and metal ridges to the towers and turrets. Decorative carved brick stacks and elaborate carved stone details are present throughout. The quality and complexity of the design extends to the other elevations as well.

Inside, a vaulted stone main corridor runs along the ground floor, retaining original light fittings. An open well staircase features an elaborate carved balustrade, armorial glass in the windows, and fixed paintings. Many of the original interior features remain, although some alterations have been made in the 20th century.

The house was purchased in 1932 and subsequently operated as Borocourt Hospital.
