Description
The obelisk at the junction of Marlow Road and Northfield End dates from around 1806. It has a square plan and is made of Portland stone, featuring a short base, a moulded plinth, and a cap, with a tapering shaft. This structure was originally erected at the crossing of Hart Street and Market Place to commemorate Middle Row, which was demolished to improve access to the new Henley Bridge that opened in 1786. The obelisk was formerly combined with a pump. It is part of a group that includes Denmark House, Elm House, Ruperts Elm, Ruperts Guard, White House, the Obelisk, and No 30, as well as Nos 1 to 11 and 15 to 25 (odd) opposite, and Nos 93 and 95, Nos 70 to 102 (even), along with the building at the rear of No 70, Bell Street, and Tarry's Cottage, Bell Cottage, and The flat on Ruperts Lane.
