Description

The Model Farm, including cattlesheds and attached buildings, is located approximately 15 meters south of the farmhouse. Built in 1856 by William Wilkinson for the Earl of Macclesfield, this structure features cattlesheds, implement and cart sheds, and a smithy. It is constructed from Flemish bond brick and has a gabled Welsh slate roof with a brick stack. The central row of cattlesheds is flanked by six originally open yards on the left and cartsheds and implement sheds next to the blacksmith's shop on the right. The building is single-storey with a triple-gabled front. It has a gauged brick flat arch over a mid-19th century sliding door leading to the feeding passage in the center, and a segmental-arched entry to the implement shed in the right bay. The right side features a four-bay cartshed supported by cast-iron posts. Inside, there are king-post roofs with iron sanctions. To the right of the six covered cattlesheds is a feeding passage that provides access to the open yards on the left, which were later covered over in the 19th century. This farm complex was part of the Home Farm designed by Wilkinson, which received high praise from contemporaries, as noted in the Illustrated London News on December 12, 1857.
