Description

The Church of St. Mary is a building of group value, dating back to the 11th century with significant additions and alterations through the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, and further work in approximately 1849 and 1877. It is constructed of flint and stone with stone dressings, with the nave rendered, and has slate and plain-tile roofs.

The church follows a cruciform plan, featuring a central tower. The main entrance is a Romanesque doorway in the centre of the nave, featuring columns with carved capitals supporting a zig-zag moulded arch. A blocked Romanesque lancet window is located to the left of the centre. Later windows include C19 three-light windows with Reticulated tracery, two-centred arches, hood moulds, and carved end stops. A two-centre arched doorway provides access to the tower stair turret, and a Romanesque lancet is set within the south transept return. Further windows incorporate Perpendicular tracery with carved faces.

The rear of the chancel displays three lancets, a round-topped Romanesque window, and a three-light window with Reticulated tracery. The north transept has a Romanesque lancet, and the rear of the nave includes a blocked doorway and windows of Reticulated tracery. The tower has two-light louvred openings with Reticulated tracery on each side, a paired trefoil lancet to the west, and a battlemented top.

Inside, the crossing features Romanesque arches supported by half-columns with carved capitals. Medieval tiles are visible on the floor of the south transept, and sedilia are located to the right of the chancel.
