Description

Rycote Farm Labourers' Cottages are a pair of cottages, now functioning as a single dwelling, built in 1937 by architect H.S. Goodhart-Rendel. The cottages are constructed from whitewashed brick and some weatherboarding, topped with a complex clay plain tile roof that is half-hipped and extends to the ground floor ceiling on the sides. They feature red brick central ridge and lower side stacks, showcasing a Domestic Revival style with small-paned casements and a symmetrical plan.

The exterior has a front elevation with a half-hipped gable, which includes two 4-light casements on the first floor above two 3-light casements with cambered lintels. The sides have a 2-light casement in the lower section, followed by a door topped with a weatherboarded section that projects above the sloping roof line, containing a 3-light casement that illuminates the staircases on either side. Additional small casements are present beyond this. The rear also features a half-hipped gable with two renewed 4-light casements on the first floor, a 3-light window, a French door, and two single-light casements that have replaced the original back doors.

Inside, most of the original room layout remains intact with minimal changes made for the conversion into a single dwelling. The interiors retain their fireplaces, 2-panel doors, and both staircases. Goodhart-Rendel, primarily known for his church architecture, designed these cottages during the same period he was remodeling Rycote Park. They are notable examples of his work from a time when he was at the height of his architectural career, alongside Rycote Farmhouse, with which they are grouped.
