Description

The Keeper’s Cottage is a gamekeeper’s cottage, dating from the late 18th century, with extensions and remodelling occurring in the mid 19th century. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick, with a thatched roof and brick and stone stacks. It follows a two-unit lobby-entry plan and is designed in a cottage ornée style. The cottage is one storey high with an attic. The two-window front features a central doorway with a plank door and rectangular overlight, flanked by two-light casement windows. The older section on the right-hand side has segmental arches over the windows, while the newer section has gauged-brick flat arches. The roof has two small, inset, two-light dormers and projects at the front to create a verandah supported by seven rustic posts. A central octagonal stack has a moulded stone cap; the stacks on the right gable have been rebuilt. The left-hand gable has a bargeboard with an apex pendant, originally covered in bark. Inside, there is a large brick open fireplace incorporating a bread oven. Nuneham Park, in which the cottage is situated, is included in the Historic Buildings and Parks Committee (HBNC) County Register of Gardens at Grade I.
