Description
The terraces to the south, west, and north of Nuneham House were designed in 1832 by William Sawrey Gilpin for Archbishop Harcourt. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and squared coursed rubble walling. The terrace walls surround three sides of the main block of Nuneham House, featuring a double-tier terrace in front of the south wing designed by Smirke. The balustrades are set between square ashlar piers topped with stone balls, urns, and baskets of fruit, and are interrupted by flights of stone steps. The terraces originally extended further to the west. These features are included for their group value. Nuneham Park is also recognized in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission County Register of Gardens at Grade I.
