GREAT HASELEY NORTH WESTON SP60NE 3/50 Walled garden approx. 30m. W of Manor Farmhouse

GV II*

Walled garden with loggia. Early C18. Brick with limestone ashlar details; old plain-tile roof. Square garden with semi-circular recess to north containing loggia. High walls in Flemish bond have plinths and remains of a coping in moulded brick; built up gateways to 3 sides with heavily rusticated brick piers; doorway in north west corner has remains of a door with 6 fielded panels. Part of the east wall is now demolished. Stone Roman Ionic portico to loggia is distyle in antis and has the escutcheon of Clerke flanked by festoons in the tympanum of the pediment. Interior: Plastered, and the deeply-coved ceiling remains with high-quality festoons radiating from a central foliage rosette. Formerly part of North Weston Manor, largely demolished in the early C19, the remains of which are incorporated in Manor Farmhouse (q.v.)(V.C.H.: Oxfordshire Vol.VII, p.170).
