Description
The Church of St. James is a parish church built in 1874 by J. Gibson. It features knapped flint with stone dressing and a tiled roof. The church has a nave with a north aisle, a chancel, and a south porch, all designed in the Gothic revival style. The nave includes four lancet windows on the south side, while the chancel has two paired lancets to the south with buttresses between the windows. There is a decorated three-light window on the east wall and a decorated two-light window on the west wall. A bellcote is located at the apex of the west gable of the nave. The south porch is timber framed, with a gabled tiled roof resting on a flint and stone base.
Inside, the church features red brick with buff and black brick decoration, and a wooden vault in the chancel. Notable fittings include two windows in the north aisle that contain 15th-century Flemish glass. Additionally, there is a piscina and a Romanesque font that were brought from St. James' Church in Bill Bottom. The church is recognized for its collection of medieval glass and the font.
