Description

Romeyns Court is a substantial house built in the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features coursed limestone rubble and ashlar dressings, topped with an old plain-tile roof that has brick stacks on stone bases. The house is designed in an H-plan, which has been infilled, and consists of two storeys plus attics. The six-window front includes projecting two-window wings that have been altered with 19th-century sash windows and a canted bay window on the right. The central section has a 19th-century crenellated infill with a central four-centre arched doorway and small four-pane sash windows. The hipped roof is adorned with a central three-light roof dormer, flanking lateral stacks, and a ridge stack positioned to the left of centre.

At the rear, there is a moulded wooden cove and 20th-century infill at the ground floor, along with some 18th-century sash windows set under brick segmental arches. The rear also shows various alterations, including two blocked original window openings beneath stone flat arches and remnants of the former two-three-two arrangement of bays. There are four roof dormers in total.

Inside, the spine passage features a late 17th or early 18th-century stair with bobbin-turned balusters on the right and an early 19th-century stair on the left. The interior also boasts 18th-century plaster cornices and butt-purlin roofs with some cambered collars. Four purlins, which may be re-used, are decorated with carved nail-head designs similar to those found on the 16th-century gate arch to the Manor.
