Description
The Barn is a 17th-century agricultural building located in Heath End, Stoke Row. It features red brick walls in irregular bond set on a flint and brick plinth, with an old plain-tile roof and consists of four bays. A datestone on the south wall reads "1659 RW," likely reset from the gable during re-roofing in the early 19th century. The upper part of the walls has been rebuilt in 19th-century brick, and the end walls above the eaves level have been reconstructed in weather-boarded timber framing, which supports the original queen post half-hipped roof. Six wooden corbels that support arch braces to the tie beams from the original roof structure still remain. Attached to the south wall is a three-bay early 19th-century open cart shed, which is timber framed and has an old plain-tile roof that is half-hipped to the south. The Barn is noted for being a rare survival of 17th-century brickwork used in an agricultural context in this area.
