Description
Bassett Manor is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The ground floor is built of red brick, while the first floor is timber framing with brick infill, some laid in a herringbone pattern. The roof is covered with old plain tiles, and there are brick stacks, one to the left and another internally towards the rear right. The house is two storeys high with an attic, and originally had a two-window front. A 19th-century ribbed door is set into the left return. The ground and first floors both have 3-light wood mullion windows. The attic has two cross-gables, revealing a double queen post roof truss, and also features 3-light wood mullion windows. Internal alterations were carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries, including the installation of a 19th-century dog-leg staircase. The house is reputed to be where Charles Reade wrote "The Cloister and the Hearth".
