Description
The entrance gateway, located approximately 15 metres northwest of Master's Court, dates back to around 1569 and was restored in the late 20th century. It is constructed from uncoursed stone rubble with ashlar stone dressings. The gateway features a four-centred archway with a moulded stone surround and a hood mould, which holds an 18th-century gate that has three panels at the base and open railings above. The structure is topped with a crowstepped gable that has angled coping. Low walls made of 18th-century red brick flank both sides of the gateway. This gateway was once part of a group of three gateways that formed the courtyard of the Grammar School, now known as Master's Court.
