Description

Rose Villa is a house dating from the late 17th century, with an extension from the 18th century. It is constructed of clunch rubble and flint, featuring brick dressings, and some timber framing with brick infill. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a brick gable stack. The house has a single-unit plan with a rear outshut and stands two storeys plus attics high.

The front of the house has three windows, with alternating bands of rubble (now rendered) and flint, and features storey bands and gauged-brick flat arches over the original openings. On the first floor, there are two 2-light casements and a narrower blocked window on the extreme right above the doorway. The ground-floor windows have been replaced by a 20th-century 4-light casement. The roof has two gabled dormers and is half-hipped to the right, with a stack on the left projecting beyond the gable wall. The right gable wall is timber framed. There is a secondary entrance to the left, which is part of the structure of Lawrence Cottage, although that building is not included in this listing.

Inside, there is a dogleg stair leading to the attics, featuring a pine balustrade with shaped splat balusters and newels topped with pointed finials. The interior also includes an open fireplace with a curved moulded-brick interior, and 2-panel doors with bolection moulding and channels in the framing. It is possible that the house was originally an addition to a timber-framed structure, as the end wall of that earlier building survives within the framing of the right gable wall.
