Description
Church Farm is a barn located approximately 30 meters east-southeast of the farmhouse, which is not included in this listing. The barn dates from the mid to late 14th century and features 20th-century weatherboarding over a heavy timber frame set on a brick base. It has a half-hipped roof, with old tiles on the left side and 20th-century tiles on the right. The structure consists of a three-bay hall with aisles and has 20th-century plank double doors.
Inside, the left end wall displays eight panels, with the top four being cusped. The left truss has arch braces from the wall to the tie beam that were reset to the center when aisle posts were added to support a long tie beam. It features a queen-post truss with a tension-braced collar and arch braces to the tie, along with an arch-braced collar above, clasped purlins, diminishing principals, and wind braces. The right spere truss is constructed similarly, but the lower aisled section has arch-braced aisle posts flanked by trefoil-cusped aisles.
The barn is likely built by John de Lewknor, who also rebuilt the east end of the nearby church in the Decorated style around 1320 to 1340. Church Farm was acquired by All Souls College from Abingdon Abbey in 1340. Architectural historians Morrey and Smith date the barn to between 1350 and 1440.
