Description
Wells Farmhouse, now a house, dates from the late 17th century, with alterations around 1800. It is constructed of limestone rubble with brick dressings, and has a plain-tile roof with brick stacks on stone bases. The house follows a central staircase plan, augmented by a single-unit range. The main range has a symmetrical three-window front featuring four-pane sashes, previously sixteen-pane. It has three-course brick quoins to the window openings, segmental brick arches on the ground floor, and a moulded timber eaves-cove dating to around 1700. A 20th-century stone porch has been added. A projecting stone breast displays diagonal stacks on the left gable wall and clustered stacks to the right. A lower, irregular range to the right has a three-light casement under a brick segmental arch and a horizontal sash above, both with brick quoins. The rear of the main range retains fragments of leaded cross-windows, a central stair window with three small lights in a moulded wooden frame, and two roof dormers. Inside the main range is a dog-leg staircase leading to the attics, with heavy turned balusters. There are some elaborately moulded beams, moulded wood coves in two bedrooms, and two heavy roof trusses. A large stack between the ranges, flanked by a secondary winder stair rising from the single unit, might be of earlier date.
