Description

16 Winchester Road is a house built around 1840, with some minor alterations made in the 20th century. It features a stucco exterior and a hipped slate roof, with small paired brackets at the eaves. The building has three storeys and a basement, which are marked by band courses. The front facing Winchester Road has a single bay of sash windows, with the ground floor displaying a very shallow projection. The side facing North Parade is double-fronted, with blind windows on either side of a central door and upper sash windows. All sash windows retain their original narrow glazing bars, with the ground and first-floor windows having 12 panes each, while the second-floor windows are shorter and have 9 panes. The entrance features a flush-panelled door with a narrow overlight made of small panes, set within a wooden doorcase that has a fluted frieze. There is an altered basement access to Winchester Road.

At the rear, there is a bay to the east with sashes that have rendered voussoir arches, along with a narrow 20th-century two-storey extension that has a flat roof, and a late 20th-century conservatory. Inside, original features include a full-height staircase with matchstick balusters, column newels, and a simple moulded handrail, which rises behind the blind windows of the rear bay. The ground-floor fireplaces have reeded wooden surrounds and paterae, with panelled shutters and boxing in the front room. There is a built-in cupboard at the rear of the ground floor and narrow fireplaces on the second floor. The first-floor fireplace features a fluted frieze and cornice, but may have been relocated.

This house was built as part of the development of North Parade in the 1840s, and its three-storey height serves as an architectural end-stop to the streetscape.
