Description

Dormer Croft is an early 17th-century house, potentially with earlier origins. It is located on the east side of Cowley Road in Littlemore. The house is constructed from rubble limestone with irregular brickwork and has an old plain-tile roof and brick stacks. Originally a two-unit through-passage plan with a cross-wing, the main range has a brick-cased two-window front. It has one storey plus attics with two two-light casement windows and two dormers. The left gable displays the inscription "N/B/S/1657" on a quoin stone. The return front of the two-storey stone cross-wing has been altered, featuring 20th-century casement windows. A stone stack is present on the front gable.

The interior of the main range features two open fireplaces with cambered, chamfered bressumers; one is flanked by a wooden settle. There are chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and joists spanning onto perimeter beams. Roof trusses support a single row of trenched purlins with heavy wind-braces. Within the cross-wing, a first-floor fireplace has a timber Tudor arch. Above it is a plaster panel with a moulded arched border containing a portrait head and floral design, flanked by the date 1630. The ground floor exhibits intersecting chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.

A cottage attached to the front gable of the cross-wing is excluded from the listing.
