Description

Charity Farm Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house, dating from the early to mid-17th century. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble with dressed quoins and timber lintels, topped by a plain-tile roof featuring a brick ridge-stack. The building has a three-unit lobby-entry plan and stands two storeys tall.

The front facade has four windows, with a plank door located to the right of centre, flanked by three-light casements that have chamfered and stopped lintels, likely from the 18th century. There is a blocked door to the left. On the first floor, there are four smaller windows, all with two-light casements, except for the window on the extreme right, which has a three-light ovolo-moulded frame. The rear of the cottage features a similar window and a blocked doorway aligned with the stack.

Inside, the cottage showcases chamfered and stopped beams throughout, along with a fireplace that has a chamfered Tudor arch formed in the bressumer. It also includes three-plank doors with heavy frames and timber-framed partitions. Historically, Alice Smith donated the proceeds from the farm to the poor.
