Description
C Wing including the Round Tower is a prison block and tower built from 1785 onwards by William Blackburn. The second floor was added in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The ground floor of the tower features a batter that may be the much repaired and renewed base of a new "round tower" known to have been constructed in 1235 "in the corner of the castle." The building is made of coursed rubble with stone dressings and has an ashlar second floor. It has a pitched slated roof and consists of three storeys with eight windows. The ground floor has small flat arched windows and an entrance. The first floor has round-arched openings linked by impost bands, most of which are blind with grilled lunettes. The second floor bays are buttressed. At the southern end of the ground floor, there are early, low barrel-vaulted cells with stone flag floors. One cell retains a heavily studded door with a bar and lock, as well as three heavy transverse timbers set into the walls about 9 inches from the ground and 2 feet 6 inches apart, one of which has metal rings for manacling prisoners. These cells are known as the "Wesley Cells." The first floor cells are of low height and also have stone flagged floors.
