Description
The Headington Quarry War Memorial is a limestone structure standing approximately 4.5 meters high, located prominently in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church.
Facing east, the memorial features a Calvary cross adorned with fleur-de-lys at the angles and a sculpted figure of Christ on the cross. The cross is mounted on a tapering octagonal column with carved broach stops at its base. A sculpted band resembling intertwining branches encircles the top of the column, possibly symbolizing Christ’s crown of thorns. This column rests on a hexagonal pedestal, also with carved broach stops, which is set upon a three-stepped octagonal base.
On the east-facing side of the pedestal, the years 1914 and 1918 are inscribed. The uppermost step bears the inscription: "TO THE MEMORY OF ALL THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR" on three sides. Additionally, the dates 1939 and 1945 have been added to the north-facing side of the pedestal.
