Description

53 and 54 St Giles Street comprise part of Regent’s Park College. The building features a 16th to 17th century front with 18th century bays. It is constructed of plastered stone with a stone slate roof and incorporates two timber-framed gabled dormers.

The building is made up of two three-sided bays on either side of the central doorway, with a modern front to the ground floor and 18th century sash windows to the first floor. A 18th century sash window is located in the south gable, while a modern sash window is in the north gable. A segmental-headed stone doorway is set within a square head and a label on the north side passage. The rear of the building has been rebuilt in red brick.

The first-floor front has been modernized, but a ceiling beam remains in the north room, and a similar encased beam and a 19th century grate are found in the south room. A 17th century stone fireplace is present on the ground floor. The front of the building is notable as one of the few remaining in Oxford of its date and in a relatively original state.

Nos 31 to 46 and Nos 49 to 56 St Giles Street form a group.
