Description

The Indian Institute is a building constructed between 1883 and 1896 by architect Basil Champneys, designed in the Jacobean style. It is made of Milton stone with red brick at the rear and stands three storeys tall. The Catte Street facade features a five-window range, with ground floor windows that are four-light mullion and transom types, oriel windows on the first floor, and three-light mullioned windows on the second floor. The entrance porch is supported by unfluted Ionic columns, and there is a corner tower topped with a cupola. A parapet completes the design. The Holywell front is similar but has more varied window styles. The building holds a significant position as it closes the eastern vista along Broad Street. The Indian Institute is part of a group that includes Exeter College, The Sheldonian Theatre, and The Old Clarendon Building on Broad Street.
