Description
The Tilting Bridge, located approximately 150 meters north of Nell Bridge on the Oxford Canal, is a canal bridge dating from the late 18th century, although it has been partly renewed. This wooden tilting bridge features inclined counterweight beams and is of considerable age, though it is likely not the original structure. The bridge is supported by brick abutments that splay outwards and diminish in size, and these abutments have projecting limestone fender blocks and retain some stone copings. On both sides of the bridge, there are cast-iron plates inscribed with the number "186". This tilting bridge was designed by James Brindley and is characteristic of those found along the Oxford Canal.
