Description
Holly Cottage, located on Tithe Lane in Clifton, is a farmhouse that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the early 17th century, with extensions from the early 18th century and alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared marlstone and features wooden lintels, topped with an artificial stone-slate roof and brick stacks.
The layout follows a two-unit through-passage plan that has been extended to form an L shape. The house is two storeys high, plus an attic. The front elevation has a short wing that projects on the right side. To the left, there is a doorway and renewed casements in what was originally a single-storey bay, which has been raised to two storeys. The central section retains ovolo-moulded wood-mullioned windows, with four lights on the first floor and six lights with a king mullion on the ground floor. The main entrance, located in the angle of the ranges, has been altered and now features a 20th-century porch. The steep-pitched roof includes 20th-century gable parapets and roof dormers. The right end wall of the main range displays an earlier gable line. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have a large open fireplace and chamfered spine and lateral beams.
