Description
Duchess Bridge is a road bridge, likely built in the mid-18th century for the Duke of Buccleuch. It is constructed from marlstone ashlar and features a depressed arch with rusticated voussoirs that alternate in length. The eastern arch was originally flanked by two blind keyed occuli, but only one remains today. The bridge has a plain parapet that rises from a band, runs parallel to it, and slopes over the arch, ending in square piers. On the western side, the bridge is flanked by matching walling and additional piers that extend approximately 18 meters to the south and north. The eastern parapet has been raised. Duchess Bridge is an important feature within the grounds of Adderbury House, which was developed by Capability Brown for the Duke of Buccleuch.
