Description

The building at 59 Calverley Road, along with numbers 57, 61, 63, 65, 67, 69, 71, 73, 75, and 79, dates to approximately 1835 and was designed by Decimus Burton. Originally conceived as detached blocks of two or more houses with similar facades, they have subsequently been joined by more recent construction. The buildings were constructed in Tunbridge Wells stone and are three storeys high with a basement, although the basement is not visible from the street in some cases due to conversion to shops. A parapet with a pediment sits above the two central windows of the block. Architectural details include an eaves cornice, a cornice above the first floor, and a string course above the ground floor. Most of the original glazing bars have been lost. Number 57 has four windows and a modern shop front, lacking a basement. Numbers 61 and 65 have four windows each, while number 63 has an extension of one window to the east. Numbers 65, 67, 69, and 71 have eight windows, with one blocked window space in the centre. The outer houses, numbers 65 and 71, each have a two-storey extension with one window on the exterior. Numbers 67 and 69 have modern shop fronts and no basement. Numbers 73 and 75 have four windows each; number 73 features a two-storey extension with one window on the northwest, a modern shop front, and no basement. Numbers 77 and 79 have four windows each. Numbers 57 to 79, when considered together, form a group of group value.
