Description
This is a row of three headstones located approximately 6 meters south of the tower of the Old Church of St Peter in Pembury. The headstones date between 1709 and 1780 and commemorate members of the Driver family. Each headstone is an upright sandstone slab with curvilinear shaped heads, standing between approximately 500 millimeters and 1 meter high. They are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, with the leftmost headstone, dedicated to Elizabeth Driver, featuring italics. The left headstone is the tallest and has a double head, each carved with a winged cherub's head in profile facing each other. The inscription on this stone is very worn, but the legible date of 1780 may refer to the death of a relative. The center headstone also has a double head, with a recessed front and each head adorned with an inscribed floral pattern. This inscription records the death of Robert Driver in 1709. The right headstone has a recessed front as well and notes the death of another Robert Driver in 1719.
