Description

Hawkwell Cottages are a pair of houses dating from the mid-19th century, situated on the south side of Maidstone Road in Pembury. They face northwest. The ground floor is constructed of painted brick, while the upper levels are timber-framed and feature tile hanging, including a decorative band of scallop-shaped tiles. Brick stacks and chimneyshafts are present. The roof is covered with peg tiles.

The houses were originally designed as a pair, each one room wide and two rooms deep, mirroring each other in plan. Each has paired doorways in the centre leading to an entrance hall and staircase, with slightly projecting end stacks.

The two-storey cottages have attics within the roof space. The symmetrical front elevation features a two-window arrangement with 16-pane sashes and casements in gabled dormers. The paired central doorways contain 20th-century doors. A three-bay verandah with plain timber posts and cusped brackets extends across the front.

The interiors have not been inspected.
