Description

The Old Bazaar and Weald House is an 18th-century house and shop located on the east side of Ockley Road, Hawkhurst. Originally built as a mill house—a nearby windmill appears in early illustrations of Hawkhurst—the building later served as a public house, 'The Flying Horse', subsequently renamed 'The Weald of Kent', and became a shop by the early 20th century.

The building is timber-framed and weather-boarded with a plain tiled roof, standing on a brick base. It has a hipped roof and stacks positioned centrally to the right and at the end to the left. The house portion boasts regularly placed windows: three glazing bar sashes on the first floor and two on the ground floor. The ground floor also contains a central, panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight and open pediment on pilasters. To the right of the house is a shop, featuring a glazing bar sash window on the first floor and a 20th-century bay with plate glass windows on the ground floor. A half-glazed corner door is present, along with a multi-paned shop window on the right return.
