Description
There are two adjacent headstones located approximately 1 metre south of the nave of the Old Church of St Peter. One headstone is dated 1762 and the other is dated 1792. Both are upright sandstone slabs. The headstone on the right stands about 1.1 metres high and features a shaped head carved with an hourglass in front of crossed trumpets, surrounded by scrolls. The first line of its inscription is in Gothic lettering, while the remainder is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of Joshia Parks in 1762. The taller headstone to the left, approximately 1.5 metres high, has a shaped head carved with a radiating sunburst flanked by swags of nut-and-husk. Its inscription is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, with italics in the open pages of a book above an apron on drapery. The inscription is faint and difficult to read except in perfect lighting conditions.
