Description
This stable, located approximately 15 meters southwest of Mill House, is likely from the 18th century, with an early 20th-century addition. It is constructed of coursed sandstone ashlar, with a brick addition and a peg-tile roof.
The building has an L-shaped plan, with the original 18th-century stable facing west-southwest, while the 20th-century cartshed or garage is positioned in front of its left end. The gable-ended cartshed/garage conceals the left side of the stable. On the right side, there is a doorway framed with plain solid timber that leads to an old plank door. Above this doorway, a similar loading hatch rises from eaves level and features a gabled roof. At the right end of the stable, there is a 20th-century pivoting casement window. The main roof is gable-ended.
Inside, the stable has plain carpentry details and a three-bay roof supported by tie-beam trusses with staggered butt purlins. This stable is part of a significant group of related buildings that form the estate village of Old Groombridge.
