Description

The Lodge is a former lodge to Burrswood House, dating from around 1838. It underwent significant modernization in 1979, which included large extensions. The building features coursed sandstone ashlar and some exposed timber framing, along with a sandstone stack and chimney shaft, topped with a peg-tile roof.

The Lodge is now an L-plan house, with its entrance located in the new section facing north. The original lodge forms the east wing, which consists of a two-room plan that originally faced east towards Old Groombridge. There is an axial stack situated between the two rooms. The building is single storey with attic rooms in the roof space.

Architecturally, it displays a restrained Tudor style, with a two-bay east front. All windows are 20th-century casements without glazing bars. To the left, there is a full-height bay that slightly projects from the main front, featuring a timber-framed first floor section that jetties further forward and rests on exposed joists. The ground floor window in this bay is also set forward from the center. To the right, a window blocks the original doorway, and above it is a gabled doorway. The roof is gable-ended, and the tall stone ashlar chimney shaft is in a Tudor style. The bay window on the right gable end is made of reconstituted stone and dates from 1979.

The Lodge is set back some distance up the drive to Burrswood House and has group value with the well-preserved village.
