Description

Old Mullions is a house that likely dates from the early to mid 17th century, with some late 20th century additions. It features a framed construction that is mostly covered in weatherboarding, with some brick underbuilding, and has a peg-tile roof topped with a brick stack.

The house has a south-facing, three-room lobby entrance plan, with a rear left outshut and two 20th century additions on the south front. The original structure is heated by back-to-back fireplaces in an axial stack located to the left of center, while an unheated service room is to the right. A narrow bay immediately to the right of the existing stack suggests that the house may have originally included a smoke bay, indicating that the basic structure could be older than the 17th century, although it has been significantly remodeled and re-roofed during that time.

The exterior is two storeys high. The front elevation of the original house is mostly hidden by the 20th century additions. The roof is gabled at both ends and features an axial stack with four staggered shafts and corbelled brick cornices. The facade is asymmetrical and four windows wide. On the left, there are 20th century French windows on the first floor that open onto the roof of a flat-roofed single-storey addition. To the right of these, there are likely 20th century four-pane casements, with a similar window at the far right on the first floor. A gabled single-storey music room wing projects at right angles from the ground floor on the right side. The rear elevation has a catslide roof over the left outshut, and the entrance to the house is located at the return of this outshut. There are two first floor mullioned windows on the rear wall of the main range, set high under the eaves, featuring diagonally-set mullions and 20th century external glazing.

Inside, the carpentry is exposed and has a plain, somewhat rough character. There are open fireplaces with oak lintels and brick jambs. The hall includes an axial beam and a crossbeam, with the latter positioned about one meter in front of the fireplace, corresponding to the narrow bay in the wall framing. The wall framing features formed jowls on the wall posts. The roof is a clasped purlin design, with timbers that are of slender scantling.
