Description
Townsend Cottages is a row of cottages located on Buckhurst Road in Frittenden. The buildings date back to the 15th century and were altered and extended in the late 16th century and again in the late 19th or early 20th century. They are constructed with a timber frame that is partially exposed, featuring plaster infill, and are underbuilt with red and blue brick. The cottages have a plain tiled roof and consist of two sections, each with two bays, originating from a hall house design.
The cottages are two storeys high, with the ground floor clad in brick. The left section projects slightly and has a panelled frame with a half-hipped roof. The right section features close-studding and a gabled roof with a steeper pitch. There are several stacks: one to the left in front of the ridge, another at the rear centre right, and a notable 16th-century stack with clustered flues at the end right.
On the first floor, there are four wooden casements, with a mullioned window located to the centre right. The ground floor has three segmentally headed three-light wooden casements and a central casement, along with three panelled doors. Historical records from Igglesden in 1923 mention a soot-blackened louvre in the roof and a moulded door frame.
