Description
The ice house at Benenden School is an early 19th-century structure that was restored in the 1970s. It features a large beehive-shaped chamber constructed from English bond red brick, with a header bond at the top. The exterior displays exposed brickwork up to a height of about 5 feet. The original round-headed entrance has been replaced with a 20th-century brick entrance that has a flat gabled tiled roof and double wooden doors. This ice house was built for the original Hemstead House, which was demolished around 1859 when David Brandon constructed the current building.
